His Highness The Amir visits the US

His Highness The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani headed a high-level Qatari delegation on an official visit to the United States on 6 April 2018. The visit aimed to strengthen bilateral relations in the fields of security, counterterrorism, defence and the economy.

HH The Amir first met with several high-level US officials to discuss military and strategic issues. These included meetings with Commander of US Central Command General Joseph Votel, and US Secretary of Defence Jim Mattis, to discuss ways of enhancing military cooperation between the two countries.

“We are working together in the face of terrorism and we are looking at ways to develop this relationship,” HH The Amir said, speaking at the Pentagon, the US Department of Defence headquarters in Virginia.

On 10 April, HH The Amir met the President of the United States, Donald Trump, at the White House.

The two leaders discussed cooperation on a wide range of security and economic issues, including efforts to bolster their joint military capabilities and to advance new commercial deals.

They also discussed the grave situation in Syria, the urgent need to resolve the current Gulf crisis and the importance of a united Gulf Cooperation Council to promote regional security and stability.

HH The Amir also attended an evening reception hosted by the US-Qatar Business Council and the US Chamber of Commerce. During the reception, he highlighted Qatar’s goal to double the size of its economic partnership with the US, which currently stands at more than $125 billion. He also added that more than 650 American companies operate in Qatar.

HH The Amir’s visit to the US confirmed the long history of cooperation and mutual respect between the two countries.
