Hamad International Airport completes expansion project

Capacity increases to over 65 million passengers annually following the opening of concourses D and E

Hamad International Airport has announced the opening of Concourses D and E, marking the completion of its comprehensive expansion project which started in 2018.

This expansion increases annual capacity to over 65 million passengers, while the terminal area has expanded by 14% to cover 845,000 sqm. The project adds 17 new boarding gates, raising the total to 62.

The new concourses aim to enhance flight connectivity, streamline operational processes and significantly reduce reliance on buses for passenger transport, improving the overall travel experience and reinforce Doha’s position as a leading global aviation hub.

Eng Badr Mohammed Al Meer, Group Chief Executive of Qatar Airways Group, said: “Hamad International Airport is more than a gateway; it is a vital pillar of Qatar’s growth and global connectivity. I am pleased to see this expansion project, with conclusion of both concourses going live, which I have personally been involved with since 2018.”

He added: “While many global airport expansions have faced delays, we are proud to have delivered this major development ahead of schedule. This achievement reflects our commitment to operational excellence and strategic planning.”

The CEO emphasised that the expansion’s significance extends beyond increasing the airport’s capacity. It also strengthens Qatar Airways’ network, improves operational flexibility, and supports economic diversification in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.

He continued: “This expansion strengthens the entire Qatar Airways network, enhances operational resilience and supports Qatar’s economic growth in line with its National Vision 2030, allowing us to meet evolving global travel demands while reinforcing Qatar’s position as a leading aviation hub.”

The concourses feature advanced automated boarding systems, ensuring smoother boarding processes, greater operational efficiency, and faster procedures. Smart technology facilitates quick travel document verification, reduces waiting times and ensures seamless transitions from the terminal to the aircraft.

Both concourses are designed to meet GSAS 4-star certifications and LEED Gold sustainability standards, incorporating energy-efficient systems, innovative water management solutions and climate control measures to align with global sustainability goals.

The major expansion of Hamad International Airport, ranked the World’s Best Airport and the Best Airport Shopping by the 2024 Skytrax World Awards, also introduced numerous enhancements. These included The Orchard, an indoor tropical garden, an expanded central concourse to improve passenger flow and enhanced shopping and hospitality experiences featuring top international luxury brands.
