Prime Minister launches the National Food Security Strategy 2030
HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, launched the State of Qatar’s National Food Security Strategy 2030 this week.
The comprehensive strategy aims to achieve sustainable food security through guiding principles, including promoting healthy consumption habits, ensuring food safety and quality, fostering sustainability, adapting to climate change and building effective partnerships.
During the launch ceremony, HE Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah, Minister of Municipality, emphasised that the National Food Security Strategy 2030 represents a significant step in strengthening Qatar’s ability to address current and future food security challenges. He noted that the comprehensive strategy exemplifies the visionary commitment of Qatar’s leadership to achieve sustainable development and food security.
HE the Minister of Municipality further explained that Qatar has positioned its agricultural sector as a key driver of economic diversification and sustainable development. The Third National Development Strategy, launched earlier this year, prioritises food and agriculture, focusing on developing sustainable agricultural technologies and boosting local production. This aims to promote efficient resource use and strengthen food security.
HE highlighted Qatar’s commitment to supporting local farmers through targeted initiatives and agricultural support programs. These measures have significantly increased the volume and quality of local agricultural production, elevating the standing of Qatari crops in the market. Qatar has also developed a sustainable and resilient food system that adapts to global challenges to ensure safe and sustainable food supplies and contribute to societal stability.
The Strategy is founded on three essential pillars. The first focuses on enhancing domestic production through modern, sustainable technologies that align with market demands and ensure reliable food supply. The second establishes robust strategic reserves and sophisticated early warning systems to maintain food security during crises. The third pillar concentrates on diversifying food sources through enhanced international trade relations and strategic partnerships with food-producing countries.
To support implementation, the strategy introduces targeted initiatives designed to help farmers and agricultural businesses overcome operational challenges. These measures involve optimising pricing mechanisms, safeguarding local products and reinforcing their competitiveness against imports.
The launch of the National Food Security Strategy 2030 reflects Qatar’s steadfast commitment to achieving sustainable food security through enhanced domestic production efficiency, resilient food supply chains and adaptive responses to global changes. The strategy further emphasises that success hinges on coordinated efforts among all stakeholders, further cementing Qatar’s position as a pioneer in food security and sustainable development globally.
