Ministry of Environment and Climate Change launches 2024-2030 Strategy

Under the patronage of HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change launched its 2024 – 2030 Strategy under the theme “Together Towards a Sustainable Environment for a Better Future.”

The ceremony was attended by HE Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, alongside other ministers and senior Qatari officials.

The strategy aims to support environmental sustainability, striking a balance with development needs. It further aims to enhance Qatar’s ability to adapt to climate change, protect the environment and conserve its natural resources. To achieve these goals, the strategy focuses on consolidating both institutional and societal cooperation, in addition to capitalising on general environmental awareness among the wider population.

Speaking on this occasion, HE Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie stated that the new strategy represents a pivotal moment for the Ministry’s commitment to achieving the Qatar National Vision 2030. He further highlighted that the strategy strengthens the Ministry’s leadership in the sustainability sector as part of the Third National Development Strategy.

HE elaborated that the strategy’s success is founded on four key pillars, with environmental sustainability and climate change as the first focus. He stressed that addressing climate change and advancing sustainable environmental practices are core to the Ministry’s mission.

The second pillar centres on supporting research, innovation and digital transformation, through which the Ministry seeks to use advanced technology to reach innovative environmental solutions and improve monitoring and analysis systems with the goal of effectively addressing environmental challenges.

The third pillar refers to strengthening environmental legislation and policies, adhering to sustainability standards and providing protection for ecosystems from cyber risks within the governance framework.

The fourth pillar focuses on building sustainable institutional development, which aims to develop institutional capabilities and enhance community partnership through cooperation and effective participation.

The new strategy by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change aligns with the environmental pillar of the Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims to balance between meeting immediate needs and protecting the environment by improving environmental awareness, developing flexible and comprehensive legislation, supporting efforts to address climate change and encouraging cooperation and joint action to preserve the environment.

Reflecting Qatar’s national targets and its commitment to environmental sustainability, the strategy includes a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, the restoration of 30% of affected natural habitats, the protection of 30% of land and coastal areas and the conservation of 17 endangered and endemic species to preserve biodiversity.
