His Highness the Amir inaugurates Doha Forum 2024

Under the patronage of HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, the 22nd Doha Forum was hosted under the theme ‘The Innovation Imperative’ from 7-8 December.

During the opening ceremony, HH the Amir honoured several distinguished journalists for reporting from conflict zones with the Doha Forum Award. Recipients included Wael Dahdouh and Carmen Joukhadar of Al Jazeera, Motaz Azaiza, Dylan Collins, and Christina Assi of Agence France-Presse, and Sadaf Babolzaei, Director of Arman FM and Warakzia FM.

HH the Amir also toured the Road to Peace Mediation Exhibition, which showcased Qatar’s 70-year journey of international mediation across 29 countries. The exhibition also presented compelling artwork and personal narratives from refugees whose lives were transformed through such diplomatic efforts.

In his opening address, HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasised that the Doha Forum has grown into a global platform, fostering unity among leaders to tackle complex global issues and create innovative solutions.

He noted: “This year’s theme, ‘The Innovation Imperative,’ represents our recognition of humanity’s pressing challenges and the necessity for a vision that both anticipates future needs and resolves today’s realities. Creativity and innovation must now take precedence in solving long-standing global issues.”

HE the Prime Minister further emphasised that past experiences demonstrated the ineffectiveness of conventional approaches to crisis resolution, advocating for innovative strategies to address political, security and environmental challenges. This approach, HE the Prime Minister explained, must begin by addressing root causes while maintaining core principles, leveraging existing resources, and harnessing the transformative potential of emerging technologies.

HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani noted “What we are witnessing in Gaza today is undoubtedly a glaring example of this vicious cycle—a humanitarian tragedy of unprecedented scale, and a genocide unfolding before our very eyes. Its grave consequences threaten the stability of the entire region, as seen most prominently in Lebanon, prompting fundamental questions about the effectiveness of traditional approaches to addressing conflicts.”

Doha Forum encompasses a range of discussions focused on geopolitical challenges, technological governance, global security, economic development, peacebuilding, humanitarian crises in conflict zones, digital governance, the future of international cooperation, and more.

This year’s edition has attracted over 4,600 participants from more than 140 countries, including over 350 speakers. The forum serves as a vital platform for policymakers, thought leaders, innovators, and experts globally to exchange ideas and explore innovative solutions to address the world’s most pressing challenges amid escalating international conflicts and rising global violence.
