Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs participates in Arab Day of Older Persons celebrations

Under the patronage and in the presence of HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Center for Empowerment and Care of the Elderly (Ehsan) hosted the Seniors of Honour Forum to celebrate the Arab Day for Older Persons, observed annually on 10 October.

Among the attendees were HE Mariam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad, Minister of Social Development and Family, alongside senior officials and Ehsan Center beneficiaries.

In her address, the Minister of Social Development and Family commended the directives of HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, to provide comprehensive care and attention to the elderly. She added: “This reflects His Highness’ commitment to  ensuring dignified living for those who have dedicated their lives  to serve our nation  and contribute to its development.”

HE Al Misnad added that the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs’ attendance at the celebration further underscores the importance the country places on supporting the elderly. She added: “I assure you, Your Excellency, that we view your directives as a solemn responsibility. We have incorporated a timeline within our ministry’s strategy to achieve the highest standards of care for our esteemed elders and all social groups.”

HE added: “We remain devoted to enhancing the quality of services provided to you and will continuously review and improve measures to ease your daily lives. We will always be with you, caring for your needs and serving as your trusted support system.”

The Ehsan Center operates under the Qatar Foundation for Social Work, an affiliate of the Ministry of Social Development and Family. It aims to empower and support the elderly, promote their participation across sectors and raise awareness about their rights. It also emphasises the crucial role of family in eldercare, in line with the Third National Development Strategy 2024-2030, which focuses on building a cohesive society, preserving traditional values and fostering strong family bonds.

The State of Qatar spearheaded the initiative to designate 10 October as the Arab Day for Older Persons, starting in 2023. The Secretariat General of the Arab League promptly embraced this proposal, officially establishing the date to raise awareness of the rights of the elderly, and the challenges they face, fostering their empowerment across all Arab societies.
