Launched under the slogan ‘Memories of the Future,’ the strategy marks a transformative step in preserving Qatar’s archival heritage
HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, unveiled the National Archives of Qatar’s first strategy for 2025-2030.
The launch event was attended by HE Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Attiyah, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Archives of Qatar, Dr Ahmed Abdullah Al Buainain, Secretary-General of the National Archives of Qatar and a distinguished group of ministers and senior officials.
The strategy is a comprehensive framework designed to enhance Qatar’s documentation system and ensure the preservation of the nation’s rich historical heritage. It outlines key initiatives for managing and archiving documents, promoting transparency, supporting sustainable development and protecting Qatar’s unique identity.
In a post shared on X, HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said, “Protecting national memory is a shared responsibility. As a crucial step in this journey, we are launching the first-ever strategy for the National Archives of Qatar, which seeks to strengthen the documentation system and preserve the historical heritage of Qatar and the region for future generations.”
The strategy includes more than 24 projects, each aimed at enhancing the National Archives of Qatar’s capacity to preserve and document the country’s history across various forms and sources. Among the prominent initiatives is the International Documentation Project, which seeks to gather and preserve documents related to Qatar, the region as well as the Arab and Muslim worlds. This project involves acquiring copies of documents from international institutions, ensuring the completeness of the national archival record and providing accurate references for researchers and institutions.
Another key initiative is the Institutional Documentation Project, which focuses on preserving official records from national institutions, including official documents, organisational structures, ministerial hierarchies and government decisions. This project aims to create a clear and accessible record that reflects the evolution of institutions over time, enabling entities to manage their documents with greater efficiency.
A third project, the Community Documentation Project, is designed to engage the public in safeguarding Qatar’s documentary heritage. It focuses on preserving documents, manuscripts and personal collections considered vital to Qatar’s identity. The National Archives of Qatar recognises the importance of both institutions and individuals, including private libraries, in preserving these documents. Through awareness initiatives and partnerships with relevant stakeholders, the project aims to strengthen this collective effort.
The Oral Documentation Project represents a groundbreaking step in documenting national memory. This initiative will capture the testimonies of key figures who have played a pivotal role in shaping Qatar’s history. By using state-of-the-art technology, it aims to preserve their stories for future generations.
These initiatives underscore the National Archives of Qatar’s drive to stay at the cutting edge of global document management advancements. The Archive’s efforts go beyond simple preservation, aiming to develop systems that facilitate the effective use of these priceless resources. The strategy seeks to turn Qatar’s documents into an invaluable knowledge resource that empowers decision-makers and helps future generations appreciate the country’s history and progress.
The National Archives of Qatar Strategy 2025-2030 ushers in a new phase of preserving Qatar’s heritage, ensuring the sustainability of the national archive and protecting the country’s legacy for the future.
