24 May 2022

His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, highlighted the need for international cooperation to achieve peace during his speech at the opening session of the World Economic Forum 2022, which was held in Davos under the theme “History at a Turning Point”. His Highness stressed that before the world can hope for economic prosperity, international peace must first be achieved.

“As long as we believe our efforts could save even a single life, our attempts to mediate will be worth it. Our united efforts need to be based on the principles already agreed on: in the Charter of the United Nations, international law, and respecting each other’s sovereignty”, added His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

HH the Amir further stressed Qatar’s firm rejection of any violation of international law, including aggression on the sovereignty of states. He further reiterated the State’s commitment to contributing to a peaceful resolution to the conflict between the Russian Federation and Ukraine.

HH the Amir urged all countries to equally shed light on injustices all over the world, citing the conflict in Palestine, “which has been an open wound since the establishment of the United Nations”. In this context, HH referred to some governments’ double standards when addressing human suffering based on national, ethnic or religious considerations.

Throughout his speech, His Highness the Amir underscored the importance of international cooperation across sectors, including the shared responsibility to protect the environment. His Highness highlighted Qatar’s efforts to focus its resources on financing the development of technologies to reduce emissions and mitigate environmental risks.

HH the Amir added that Qatar understands the importance of LNG production in ensuring reliable energy security is provided to the world and is committed to mindful collaboration between stakeholders to achieve that.

High Highness looked ahead to the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, welcoming all countries and visitors to experience all that Qatar and the Arab World has to offer: “We believe that sport is a tool for positive change, promotes tolerance and respect, empowers youth and inspires unity.  We stand by that belief, and I hope you’ll join us to discover the beautiful game, as it is played in our country”.

HH also stressed that the State of Qatar has spared no effort so that “this major sports-event can allow our entire region the chance to host the world”.

In a call for international cooperation, His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani closed with, “Our common interest, our common responsibility, and the common destiny of all humanity requires partnership. So that all of us can live in peace”.

During this year’s forum, state officials have agreed on the need to build and consolidate a world based on cooperation and accountability.
