His Highness the Amir participates in the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly
His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, attended the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 74), being held in New York from 17 – 30 September.
HH the Amir was accompanied by a high-level Qatari delegation, including His Excellency the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, and HE Minister of Finance, Mr Ali Shareef Al Emadi.
On the side-lines of UNGA 74, the Qatari delegation attended several events pertaining a wide range of UN agenda items – including sustainable development, education, climate change, counter terrorism and international security.
On Monday 23 September, His Highness the Amir of Qatar spoke at the United Nations Climate Action Summit. During the summit he announced that the State of Qatar is committed to contributing $100 million for the support of small developing island states and least developed states to build the capacity to counter climate change.
During his speech at the Summit, His Highness further mentioned that the State of Qatar is committed to organising an environmentally-friendly FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
On Tuesday 24 September, His Highness the Amir addressed the General Assembly through a speech discussing several topics – including Qatar’s role in mediating international conflicts, promoting human rights both domestically and abroad, as well as the country’s commitment to ensuring global peace and security.
Further shedding light on Qatar’s commitment to protecting human rights, His Highness told the General Assembly: “The State of Qatar has pursued a consistent policy to protect and promote human rights, on the basis of our Arab and Islamic principles and values that uphold human value.. Qatar has made significant achievements in terms of workers’ rights and work conditions in coordination with the International Labor Organization.”
His Highness also underlined Qatar’s active participation in international efforts aimed at combatting violent extremism. In this regard, he referred to the partnership agreement between Qatar and the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office, and the allocation of $75 million for strengthening the UN’s Office capabilities.
His Highness concluded his speech by highlighting Qatar’s role in promoting human development. He said: “The State of Qatar has recently announced the support of the core resources of the United Nations with the allocation of 500 million dollars to be added to the support that Qatar has already provided, thus, Qatar is now considered as one of the biggest partners supporting the United Nations in various fields.”
